Remember when Christmas time was magical?

Remember when Santa might catch you doing something naughty and so you were always looking over your shoulder? Well, at least I was looking over my shoulder. Maybe the rest of you were always good...?

I found the magic again when my kids were little. It was fun when they would think they saw an elf at the grocery store. It was great when they worried because we didn't have a chimney. I had to retell the story that my dad told me. . . maybe you've heard it before, it's about an elf small enough to slip in through the key hole and unlock the door for Santa.
I've felt a little sad this year because my kids have out grown Santa.
Lexa first doubted when she was four. Can you believe it? Only four and already thinking a sleigh can't fly around the world in one night. I was sad but it was fun to tell her how the legend of Santa came to be. I loved watching her help Jet believe. Our rule is that once you know the secret about Santa, you have to keep him alive in your heart and never spoil it for those who don't know.
In kindergarten, Jet asked a lot of questions. (He thought Santa was Daddy.) I told him about Santa's legend but when Christmas got closer, he seemed to forget and he got caught up in the magic. The same thing happened last year.
But not this year.
It isn't all sad news though. They have been helping me buy gifts for a family who is in need. They know the kids and so they have hand-picked several of the presents. We finished up the shopping this morning and on the way home they talked and talked about Christmas.
And the magic was back!
They talked about how much the children from our "special family" will love the gifts. They talked about being Santa's elves. And then, Jet said, "Well, Mom, we know the secret of Christmas!" I listened, fully expecting to hear him tell me that Santa isn't real. But as he told me the secret that some people don't know. I was surprised because it had nothing to do with Santa.
Here it is, for all of those people out there who don't know, Christmas is about Jesus Christ! (Imagine my happy mom smile right here.)
Lexa joined in at this point and they told me everything they could think of about Jesus Christ. They talked about His birth. After that they told me everything they could think of about His resurrection. Then all about baptism. We were in the middle of a snow storm and the road was slippery. We were only going about 20 mph. I slowed down to 15 mph to make it last a little bit longer.
I'm adding this to my list of lessons learned this year. There is something much better than Christmas magic. And that would be. . .THE LIGHT OF CHRIST. . Shining in the eyes of His little ones.
