Freedom Festival

Children's Art Show
7.6.2007
FYI: The 4th of July is my favorite Holiday!

AJ and JDC both entered the Freedom Festival Children's Art Show this year. JDC received a great artist ribbon for his watercolor named "American Flag." The judges told him that they loved the bold colors. AJ received the best patriotic theme award for her pastel piece entitled "My Dad." One fun thing that happened was that AJ was asked lead the pledge of allegiance at the awards ceremony. Also, the director of the art show called BJ and asked to spotlight his military career because AJ's art piece featured her daddy's military uniform.

When I told BJ that I saw an article about the art show in the freedom festival brochure, we thought we would challenge the kids to enter it. We felt like this was a good way to help our children understand patriotism. We want them to know what a great blessing it is to live in this country. We also did a family home evening at the senior center (the atrium) in our ward about America. (July 1st). BJ talked about George Washington, JDC led the pledge and shared a poem about the flag and AJ talked about the flag and demonstrated how to make a 5 pointed star with just one cut. I did a trivia game about the states. We had a good time. One of the best things about living here in PGTB is having the opportunity to meet a lot of great friends at the senior home. JDC also perfomed in a capoiera demonstration at the Freedom Festival.
